Students compete in a math relay race by solving word problems related to mathematical standard 7.EE.B.4.b of the IM curriculum. The objective in each round is to quickly and correctly determine which fictional character has more items and the exact amount.
OBJECTIVE
The goal is for a team to have its original starting player successfully rotate through the entire line and return to the front position first.
GAMEPLAY
The class divides into two evenly sized teams, forming two vertical lines.
A facilitator reads a word problem based on Standard 7.EE.B.4.b, such as: "Ava had 14 cookies, bought 3 more, but then had to throw away 3 because they were overbaked. How many does she have now?"
The two students at the front of the lines compete to solve the problem. They may optionally use a whiteboard and marker.
The first student to correctly identify who has more items and the exact amount wins the round.
The winner moves to the back of their team's line, and the next two competitors step up.
SCORING
The overall winning team is the one whose original first person successfully completes a full rotation through the line and returns to the front first.
